Ceasefire Now! Peace Rally And March

Hawke's Bay residents aghast at the 25,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza since October are protesting against visits to the Port of Napier by Israeli-linked ships.

On Saturday January 27 the public are being invited to join a march at 11.30am from the Napier Soundshell to the port to deliver a letter calling for a boycott of ZIM Shipping.
The letter asks New Zealand port companies to deny port facilities to ZIM shipping vessels or those contracted to ZIM Shipping.

Saturday's Napier march is organised by a collective of pro-Palestinian groups, Ceasefire Now, the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA) and Action Hawke's Bay.
Global protests against the shipping firm include protests in Auckland and Christchurch and flotillas of small craft blocking ships in Melbourne and Sydney. Malaysia has banned ZIM vessels from it's ports. ZIM Shipping is complicit in the slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza,” said PSNA regional organiser Warren Brewer.

“Zim ships are bringing arms and ammunitions to Israel to be used in Israel's genocidal war against Palestinian civilians,” Warren said. “Since the slaughter in Gaza began the CEO of ZIM Shipping Eli Glickman has pledged the company ships “will be directed as a first priority, to transfer cargo from anywhere in the world to Israel according to the requirements of the needs of the Ministry of Defence and the government of Israel”.” Since October pro-Palestinian peace rallies have been held every Sunday at the Hastings clocktower between 2pm and 3pm and regularly on the Marine Parade in Napier.

The shipping protest is part of a global movement called BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) that calls for people, companies and governments around the world to stop financially supporting Israel by boycotting their products, removing financial investments and imposing sanctions on trade. In doing so, the movement hopes to put non-violent pressure on Israel until a list of demands is met.
The BDS movement was inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement.

In Aotearoa, the groups are calling for boycotts of Israeli-owned brands SodaStream, Axa insurance, Puma, Siemens, Ahava beauty products, and HP, as well as companies supporting Israel like McDonald’s, Domino’s Pizza, and Burger King, for franchises giving free food to the Israeli army, Pizza Hut because it is owned by Yum Brands which supports Israeli startups, Starbucks for suing its union after they expressed solidarity with Palestinians on X, and Disney plus for donating millions of dollars to “humanitarian efforts” in Israel.
